Tools of the Trade:
By Carly Schuna
Working toward a professional debut? If you’re invested in a creative division but aren’t sure how to pull all of your skills together effectively, read on.
Here are a few tools that will help you excel as a pro:
For visual artists or animators, try Corel Painter. Its numerous features specialize in creating realistic mediums. Blender is also a good bet. It’s a free (yes, free!) downloadable software
animation program that matches the skill set of most mid- or high-range comparable applications. For promotion, Adobe InDesign makes it easy to craft professional, custom-made business cards, pamphlets, or posters.
If you’re a dancer or dance teacher, DanceForms 1.0 could be just what you need. It allows you to choreograph partial or full routines, so you can see them on-screen before seeing them onstage. The pricey
but excellent Vegas + DVD production suite will also help dance teachers, musicians, or audio engineers manipulate sound clips, songs, and combine audio with video for a true multimedia experience.
Also for musicians, GarageBand from Apple lets anyone compose, arrange, edit, or mix a song to top-notch studio quality. Converter software (widely available online for download) will give you a greater library to work with by converting MIDI files to wavs, mp3s, or other popular formats.
Budding cooks can use online tutorials to help them whip their skills into shape. Video and text instructions on tricky techniques and recipes are available at several renowned
websites, like Epicurious.com, Allrecipes.com, and FoodNetwork.com.
Though great to get you started, the list above is by no means exhaustive. Find out what tools work best for you, then use them to show the world your potential!
