Gotademo.com Survey of Amateur Musicians Reveals that Gender Plays a Key Role in Perceived Chances for Success
|
Results Also Reveal Lack of Exposure, Financial Resources as Major Obstacles
CHICAGO, Jun 2, 2008 – A recent study by Gotademo.com revealed a series of insights concerning some of the challenges facing amateur musicians, with gender standing out as a leading perceived determinant of success.
The survey was conducted online by Gotademo.com, an online launch pad for emerging artists that allows amateur musicians to upload demos for consideration in ongoing contests where the winner is determined by user voting.
Of all the female artists surveyed, nearly one in five listed that being taken seriously was their greatest challenge, with only one percent of men responding in the same way. Additionally, of the artists who listed being taken seriously as a major obstacle, 88 percent were women, with most of them listing male dominance in the industry as the main reason.
Lack of exposure topped the list of obstacles facing amateur artists with 23 percent of those surveyed listing it as the leading challenge, followed by lack of financial resources (20 percent), conflicts with day jobs (eight percent) and lack of promotion (seven percent).
“The results of this survey reconfirm many of the frustrations we constantly hear from talented artists with little resources for discovery or exposure.” said George Page, CEO of Gotademo.com. “Our goal is to continue incorporating this type of feedback to provide an effective, efficient platform for the discovery of up and coming talent,” added Page.
Geography also stood out as a key challenge, with 47 percent of those who listed lack of exposure as a major obstacle residing in the Midwest.
The need for additional artist exposure is especially evident in amateur artists’ responses concerning relying on music for income. Gotademo.com’s survey revealed that it takes an artist an average of 6.5 – 8.7 years of experience and three to four gigs per week to make enough money to rely on music as a primary source of income.
